Blue Spiral is Asheville’s flagship contemporary art gallery. Just in the past year, with a new director, they’ve scaled back presenting newer artists to focus on the work of more than 100 artists already housed in their three floors of showrooms. One of those is Charlotte painter and collage artist Isaac Payne. His urban landscapes fuse realism with liberal, dreamlike uses of color and even shape.

I met up with Isaac at the gallery’s First Friday reception in July and talked with him about his approach to artmaking.
