Singer-songwriter Jane Kramer navigates her heart and history with 'Moon & Mother'

Asheville singer-songwriter Jane Kramer makes new music to post mile-markers in her life. I first met Jane about eight years ago, on the eve of her third solo album, “Valley of the Bones.” A miscarriage, the death of a close friend, splitting from her husband and her longtime women’s Americana trio—Jane chronicled all of it in songs sprinkled over her first three solo albums. 

Now, with gray clouds in the rearview mirror, she sees sunshine through the windshield with her first record in seven years, The Moon and Mother. Kramer is gathering her full band to launch the record, Sept. 19 at the Ayurprana Listening Room in West Asheville.

On this episode of the See Hear podcast, Jane dives deep into personal new album and how it chronicles a profound chapter of her life — becoming a mother while losing her own mother to cancer. She talks about navigating grief through her songwriting process and questions whether the music industry still had a place for her. We also look back on her time in the Barrel House Mamas, leaving Asheville for Portland, and finding her way back — both to the city and to her voice.
